Event Details

We are so stoked to announce that Burton Snowboards is participating again in the South End Art Hop. The Art Hop is an annual art extravaganza that takes over the south end of Burlington the first weekend after labor day. Every year business open their doors to support local artists and provide them with space to display their work.

This year, Burton Snowboard employees are coming together, to exhibit their work in a group show called “77 Reasons” featuring over 20 artists. Most of the artists have jobs that are not generally considered “creative.” Their creativity comes in their off hours, at night when the kids are asleep, on the weekends or on vacation.

The employee show opens on September 10th and runs through to September 30th. We will be hosting an opening reception, with refreshments and live music on Friday 9/10 from 5-8pm at the Burton Snowboards Headquarters located at 80 Industrial Parkway, Burlington VT.

What do you really do?
I make people want to try snowboarding and like it!

Tell us a bit about yourself?
A third generation Vermonter, I like to drink tea often, eat sweets and ignore vegetables. I have an addictive “Book Reading” personality, and love fantasy movies. I am lackadaisical but have fooled most people into thinking I’m on it. I’m rarely on time or early, but usually bring ten times the effort. I make things with my hands often but rarely finish them. I have a fantastic dog named Greg, a boyfriend and a house, and enjoy using the word “stuff.”  I have a small handmade craft business on Etsy called Robot Dinosaur and I know you want to check it out.

What are your reasons for creating art?
I like how art can help you live outside your real world (at least for a moment.) I enjoy the relationships you build through being creative- people who think outside the box are always pretty fun.

Tell us about the work you will be submitting to the show.
My drawings are of animal characters acting oddly. I don’t really like to make art that is realistic looking- I always decide on subjects that are more fantasy based or weird.

Who/what inspires you?
Reading! I love to read and it always helps get my creative juices flowing. I have a very creative father that I also had as a teacher and I noticed that he applied a lot of his artistry into his teaching style. I really appreciate that he uses creativity to interact with his students and to help them learn.

Tell us one thing about you a lot of people may not know.
I played on the first ever Women’s Semi Pro Soccer team for Vermont- The Vermont Voltage

What do you really do?
Make everything fit

Tell us a bit about yourself?
I’ve been working with garments, either making them, design them or fitting them since I was about 8 years old. I love creating things, especially if it re-purposes or re-uses something old or cast off. I love exploring and treasure hunting, searching for that perfect little detail that will make the project just so.   I think that’s how I ended up working at Burton in the Softgoods area. The challenge of making it all work really is what keeps me coming back day after day.

What are your reasons for creating art?
I sort of think my art makes itself. I know it sounds hokey, but I’m just really a conduit for the energy of the pieces to come out. It’s like there are memories or ghosts stuck inside the found objects that I collect and I just put together the assorted pieces to tell the story. So I supposed I make art to exorcise my ghosts.

Tell us about the work you will be submitting to the show.
Most of my work in the art hop will be mixed media assemblage, but there might be some collage too.

Who/what inspires you?
Right now, I’m inspired by old abandoned buildings. There’s something beautiful and tragic about crumbling architecture that moves me.

Tell us one thing about you a lot of people may not know.
I’m a complete band geek- All through school I played trumpet, cornet, bugle and French horn in marching band, concert band, jazz band, what have you. I still love it, and I makes me misty eyed to hear brass playing.

Artist Spotlight – Kacey Grasso-Freel

Name: Kacey Grasso-Freel
Job Title: Web Analyst
Years at Burton: 1 year in current position, 9 years in prior positions.
What do you really do? Turn insights into actions.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I have been designing jewelry and accessories since 2003.  What started out as a hobby selling to friends and family slowly grew into a small indie business called Subsixstudios.  I currently sell online and at Trinket on Church Street.  I also participate in several local craft shows throughout the year as well as produce the Queen City Craft Bazaar bi-annually.  Through Queen City Craft I promote and support indie artists, crafters, and designers through my blog and by organizing Vermont’s only indie craft show.

I am a mother of two boys, wife to a rockin’ web developer, and protector to my rescue dog named Odie.  My creative passions include making jewelry, writing poetry, crocheting, music, playing guitar, sewing, photography, gardening and reading. My work has evolved over the years. I am currently obsessed with fiber arts and vintage metal chain.

What are your reasons for creating art?
I create because it balances my brain.  By day I am a web analyst so at night and the weekends I need to shift gears and satisfy the other side of my brain.

Tell us about the work you will be submitting to the show.
I will be submitting a few pieces from my line of fiber accessories combined with my love of vintage metal.  I am obsessed with scarves so I decided to combine my love of jewelry and scarves to create interesting neck pieces which can be worn all day.  Included in the display will be a few pairs of earrings.

Who/what inspires you?
I am inspired by the past.  My house is a collection of antique pieces handed down to me from family and I love walking through antique and thrift stores searching for interesting objects.  There is something about the quality of vintage items that intrigues me.  I enjoy the dark colors, solid construction, and the overall feeling of simplicity products from the past bring.  The local indie craft scene here in Vermont is my other big inspiration.  There is so much creativity in this state.  I am amazed every day by the people I am contact with.  They help me to keep pushing forward.

Tell us one thing about you a lot of people may not know.
I am a telephone junkie, I hate comedy, I love tea and raw honey, I reorganize the furniture in my house monthly, and I absolutely despise tardiness.

Manage dealer website

Tell us a bit about yourself?
Originally from Maine.  Attended UVM and have been here since.

What are your reasons for creating art?
To make the world a more interesting place with treasures that people might otherwise throw away.

Tell us about the work you will be submitting to the show.
A few robotic creations and a tree constructed from snowboard boots.

Who/what inspires you?
I find inspiration in the junk that I collect.  I wouldn’t classify myself as a hoarder, but I definitely have hoarder tendencies.

Tell us one thing about you a lot of people may not know.
I have an identical twin brother.

Job Title: Credit Manager

What do you really do?

I work in an awesome culture with extraordinary people.  In between the lines, I build relationships, collaborate, problem solve, confront, negotiate, counsel, compromise, lead, travel, team with my mates, hang with my dog and of course, ride.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I try not to take myself too seriously (hence the bear-shorts photo).  I’m the keeper of some BIG secrets.  “Any major dude will tell you” that I’m passionate about the good life; food, friends, music, and a woman named Susan.  I love irony, the spirit of dissention, adventure, culture, travel, all things mystic, and the (all) arts.  I named my son ‘Dylan’ after a guy named ‘Bob’… and my motorcycle ‘Betty’ after a ‘Ram Jam’ tune (Black…).  Oh, and I love my dog’s Sully and Scout (Scout is featured in one of my paintings).

What are your reasons for creating art?

I would characterize my art as being less overt, more visceral; driven from a deeper place, primal maybe – always personal – often symbolist in style.  For me, my creative life over time has been an effective way to channel emotional energy, longing and/or angst.   My work more often than not inspires more questions than answers.  I create most of it for myself; it surrounds me like fingerprints.

Tell us about the work you will be submitting to the show.

I’ve selected three recent works for the show (pictured) and may enter a forth which is currently still in progress.

The first piece (a self portrait with Scout – acrylic) was created with intended humor; in sort of a cheeky old-school style.  Scout is a Jack Russell Terrier (for anybody who understands – OMG!) which we rescued at 10 weeks old.  I wanted to do something that would inspire smiles and snickers – I had great fun with color here.

The 2nd piece is entitled “Primal Window”.  It is intended to be more “symbolist” in style – also done in acrylic.  This piece juxtaposes a window, female form and animal.  It is intended to explore the mysteries associated with introspection, feminine/masculine energy and things carnal – with imagery and color equally relevant.

The 3rd piece is entitled “Gaze”.  This is a mixed media (oil, encaustic, and acrylic) portrait of a stoic female subject – complete with an obscure message which is only fully known by the artist (me) – done in the same spirit as code writing (where the code writer is the only one who knows) .  The intent here was to create intrigue all the while maintaining the integrity of secrecy.

Painting # 4 entitled “Rogue Monkey” (24” X 24”) – Medium / Acrylic

This was a fun painting to make, from content to color; the title of which was inspired by recent headlines about a “rogue monkey” in Japan terrorizing people – complete with daily alerts on a website about his whereabouts.  I found this story wildly humorous in a scary kind of way (easy for guy living in “monkey-free” New England!) – hence the wild color layering and strokes.  The frame will be covered in Japanese newspaper clippings I picked up in Tokyo and will include the piece which inspired the title.

Who/what inspires you?

Definitely not a finite list for me but I’ll share with you a few “things and people” that hit the spot for me this week:

Things; The Ocean inspires me.  Art culture inspires me.  The notion of authentic freedom inspires me.  Injustice inspires me, etc.

Peeps; John Brown, Jimmy Carter, Quentin Tarantino, Johnny Cash, Michael Hastings, Dennis Hopper, etc.

Local Peeps; Pat Leahy, Madeline Kunin, Jernigan Pontiac, etc.

Artists; Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Max Scholder, Jasper Johns, (super long list here) etc.

Tell us one thing about you a lot of people may not know.

I’ve travelled around the world and lived in 9 states and somehow…

…I work just 1250 feet from where I was born.

Talk about gravity.
